Originally known as Liguanea - one of the few remaining words from the Arawak language, likely derived from the word "iguana," meaning lizard, St. Andrew Parish has roots that date back to Jamaica's early colonial history. The name "St. Andrew" was inspired by patron saints from Great Britain. The term "Liguanea" persists in the area, particularly as Kingston, Jamaica's capital city, is located within this plain.
Geographically, St. Andrew stretches from Cross Roads to Rockfort in the east and extends up into the Blue Mountains. It shares borders with the parishes of St. Thomas, Portland, St. Mary, and St. Catherine.
